At United Southern Bank, the security of your account is very important to us and we want to help you keep it protected. We have seen an increasing number of customers falling victim to scams and want to make sure you’re armed with the information you need to protect yourself.
Below are some of the scams targeting our community. Stay informed and protect your money. Don’t let scammers make you their next victim!
- Phishing Scams: A type of online fraud where scammers send fake emails, websites, or messages pretending to be a trusted company (like USB) to trick people into giving away sensitive information such as passwords, account numbers, or Social Security numbers.Example: You get an email that looks like it is from your bank saying, “Your account has been locked. Click on this link to verify your information.” This link takes you to a fake website that steals your login information.
Never reply to the email or click on any links. Call us directly if you have any questions.
- Smishing Scams: A version of phishing that happens over SMS text messages.Example: You get a text claiming to be from your bank saying, “The fraud department has detected unusual activity on your account. Click the link to secure your account.”
The link takes you to a fake site to steal your personal information. Never reply to the text message or click on the link. Call us directly if you have any questions.
- Spoofing Scams: A phone call where scammers impersonate a trusted company (like a bank) to trick victims into giving away personal or financial information. Scammers often use caller ID spoofing so the phone number on the screen looks like it is coming from your bank.Example: You get a call that looks like it is coming from your bank. The scammers tells you they are from the fraud department and notice unusual activity on your account. They then ask for your login information or personal information so that they can “protect” your account.
Remember, we will never call you to ask for your personal information, PIN, or online banking information. If you receive a suspicious call – even if it appears to come from our phone number- hang up immediately!
- AI Impersonation Scams: This scam uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create realistic fake audio, video, or text that convincingly mimics a trusted individual, such as a family member or someone you trust at the bank. These scams often exploit urgency and emotional manipulation to trick victims into sending money or sharing sensitive information.Example: You receive a phone call from your child saying they need money immediately for an emergency. They then ask you to wire money to a specific account to help them out of the situation.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the person back directly using a trusted phone number. Be wary of any request that demands immediate action, especially if it involves wire transfers, gift cards or cryptocurrency.
- Bank Imposter Scams: Scammers call pretending to be law enforcement or an attorney. They claim that the bank is involved in illegal activity, money laundering or shady business. They instruct you to withdraw or transfer all of your money to a “safe account” immediately. The “safe account” is controlled by the scammer and you lose all access to your funds. No real bank, law enforcement agency, or attorney will ever tell you to withdraw money to keep it safe. If you get a call like this, hang up and call your bank directly at 270.885.0056. Remember, law enforcement would put a stop to any illegal activity a bank was involved in before contacting a customer to withdraw their money.
